Roast Review: La Mulita
Roast Review by: Sheila Murray Photos by: Linked Ring
“It’s always so fun to test coffee from people we know,” said my husband, James. I couldn’t agree more! James and I moved to the New Hampshire seacoast area about a year ago and one of our first action items was checking out the local coffee shops.
When we happened across La Mulita in Rye, NH we were blown away. Max, the owner, was standing behind the counter and he introduced himself and told us what makes La Mulita so special – 100% specialty Colombian coffee is sourced from diverse regions in Colombia and roasted right on-site.
After our first cup, we knew that this would be the perfect pairing with Wacaco products. Read on to hear what happened when we tried two La Mulita roasts in tandem with the Minipresso and the Pipamoka.
Exotic Mule
First of all, let me tell you that I was already overjoyed when I opened the shipping box of coffee, because the coffee bags were neatly placed on tissue paper that had little mules all over it. It’s these little things that make a coffee roastery even more unique and memorable! If you are ever able to visit La Mulita, you’ll see there are mules everywhere and it will be hard not to go home without a t-shirt or mug that has the mule on it. Okay, on to the first impression…
First impressions
“Wow! I’m sensing notes of lime, cream, and overall brightness ,” said James, after opening the bag and smelling the freshly roasted beans.
I smelled bright red fruit (perhaps raspberry) as well as sweet honey or toasted nuts. It had such a unique and captivating aroma, which made us eager to taste it.
I took out our small but mighty Minipresso GR2 while James ground the beans using our Exagrind. We’ve been loving using the Wacaco Stellar glasses, as it always makes the resulting espresso look even more delightful. James and I discussed that the Minipresso GR2 & Stellar glasses would be the perfect gear to bring for a beach picnic.
Tasting notes
I had expected that the espresso may be a bit citrusy and acidic but was pleasantly surprised by its round mouthfeel and super smooth taste. I was getting notes of strawberry and milk chocolate.
“I’m getting a bright fruit accompanied by cream and sugar,” said James between sips. He added that there might be notes of stone fruit or blackberry.
The reveal
La Mulita says it best – “A smooth, creamy body with vibrant notes of red fruit, silky milk chocolate, and a delicate touch of sweet hazelnut. It’s the perfect brew for anyone seeking something extraordinary.”
We agreed this espresso could be enjoyed anywhere and everywhere and was bringing brightness to the rainy spring day outside.
San Vicente
First impressions
I opened the bag of coffee and shook the beans to release the aroma into the air. It filled our kitchen with comforting rich chocolate and sweet syrup, like honey.
James took the bag next and made his guesses.
“This one smells a bit darker than the last, is rich and chocolatey, and I’m getting notes of fruit too,” shared James.
After our positive experience with Exotic Mule, we were looking forward to a full cup of San Vicente, which was notably different but carried the same high quality impression. We decided to brew this one with the Pipamoka. The Pipamoka only requires ground coffee and hot water (no filters needed for this one!) but its simplicity doesn’t sacrifice the quality of flavor. We ground the beans, heated the water, and made two cups of fresh coffee.
Tastings note
I was so surprised after my first sip. The overall taste was the classic chocolatey flavor you might expect in a coffee but the body was smooth like a green tea.
James agreed that the coffee was extremely smooth and light. He tasted a balance of milk chocolate as well as either jasmine tea or subtle citrus.
It was the kind of coffee I could imagine sipping with a friend and having long conversations.
The reveal
This coffee has notes of dark chocolate, maple sugar, brown sugar, and subtle citrus undertones. Delicious!
