How to Clean and Maintain Your Portable Espresso Maker

THE WACACO GUIDE

A great espresso experience doesn't end with the last drop. A few moments of care after brewing can make a real difference to the performance, cleanliness, and longevity of your portable espresso maker.

Coffee oils, fine grounds, and residual moisture can accumulate over time, affecting flavor and sometimes interfering with the proper operation of your brewer. Fortunately, keeping your Wacaco in good condition doesn't require complicated maintenance.

Whether you own a Minipresso GR2, Minipresso NS2, Nanopresso, or Picopresso, this guide will help you develop the right cleaning habits, understand the differences between models, and keep your coffee equipment ready for its next adventure.

01 / EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS

CLEAN AFTER EVERY BREW.

A small habit that makes a big difference.

The easiest way to maintain your portable espresso maker is to clean it shortly after each use. Fresh coffee residue is easier to remove before it dries, and regular cleaning helps prevent unwanted flavors in your next espresso.

Begin by allowing the brewer to cool to a safe handling temperature. Carefully remove the coffee basket or used capsule according to your model's instructions, then clean the accessible coffee-contact components.

  1. Remove the used coffee. Empty the coffee basket or discard the capsule once the brewer has cooled and any remaining pressure has been released according to its instructions.
  2. Rinse the appropriate components. Use clean running water to remove coffee grounds and residue from the removable parts specified in your product instructions.
  3. Clean around the sealing surfaces. Check for coffee particles around accessible rims, threads, and seals. Remove any visible residue gently.
  4. Wipe the main body. Use a clean, slightly damp cloth where appropriate. Do not immerse the pump assembly.
  5. Allow everything to dry. Leave cleaned components separated until fully dry before reassembling or storing.

The process may vary slightly between ground-coffee brewers and capsule-based models, but the principle remains the same: remove residue, protect the components, and avoid storing moisture inside the machine.

WACACO TIP

Don't immediately return a wet espresso maker to its protective case. Allowing the components to dry separately helps prevent trapped moisture and unwanted odors.

02 / KNOW YOUR MACHINE

DIFFERENT BREWERS. DIFFERENT CARE.

Clean the right parts, the right way.

While Wacaco portable espresso makers share similar maintenance principles, their brewing systems are not identical. Understanding which parts require attention will help you clean your machine efficiently and avoid unnecessary disassembly.

Minipresso GR2

After each use, clean the cup, outlet head, and shower head under running water. Remove visible coffee residue from the accessible components, taking care not to damage the sealing surfaces.

The water tank only needs to be dried with a cloth. Do not place Minipresso GR2 in the dishwasher.

Minipresso NS2

Capsule brewing reduces loose coffee grounds, but residue can still collect around the capsule compartment and coffee outlet.

After removing the used capsule, clean the cup and coffee adapter compartments under running water. Dry the water tank with a cloth and allow all cleaned components to dry before storage.

Minipresso NS2 is not dishwasher safe.

Nanopresso

Rinse the coffee basket, portafilter, cup if used, and other components identified for rinsing in the Nanopresso instructions. Pay particular attention to the rim around the orange seal, where fine coffee particles can collect.

Use the supplied cleaning brush gently to remove loose grounds. Wipe the remaining components with a damp cloth as directed, and let all parts dry separately.

Nanopresso may also benefit from occasional additional portafilter cleaning, particularly if you notice unusual resistance or leaks.

Picopresso

Picopresso uses a non-pressurized, bottomless portafilter, making basket cleanliness particularly important to the brewing process.

After brewing, carefully rinse the filter basket and shower head with warm running water, and wipe the appropriate surfaces with a damp cloth. Make sure coffee grounds are removed from the basket holes and sealing areas.

Allow the components to dry separately. Do not place Picopresso in the dishwasher.

IMPORTANT

Always follow the instructions for your specific model. Components that can be rinsed under running water on one brewer may require a different cleaning method on another.

03 / DEEPER CLEANING

WHEN A QUICK RINSE ISN'T ENOUGH.

Remove residue before it becomes a problem.

Even with regular cleaning, coffee oils and very fine particles can accumulate in areas that are harder to reach.

If you notice lingering coffee odors, visible residue, or changes in extraction behavior, it may be time for a more thorough cleaning of the accessible brewing components.

Pay attention to the coffee basket

Coffee baskets contain small openings that allow liquid to flow while retaining coffee grounds. Fine particles can occasionally remain trapped after a normal rinse.

Inspect the basket under good lighting, rinse it thoroughly, and gently remove visible residue using a suitable soft cleaning brush.

For Picopresso, keeping the filter basket holes unobstructed supports consistent water flow during extraction.

Inspect the sealing areas

Coffee particles around a gasket or sealing rim can interfere with proper assembly. Check the accessible surfaces and remove any residue before reassembling your brewer.

On Nanopresso, the orange seals deserve particular attention. Wacaco provides a dedicated cleaning procedure for the Nanopresso portafilter, including optional deeper maintenance when necessary.

Refer to the official Nanopresso Portafilter Cleaning Guide before removing seals or disassembling additional components.

Avoid unnecessary disassembly

Not every part of a portable espresso maker is intended to be removed during routine maintenance.

If an internal component appears blocked or damaged, consult the appropriate Wacaco instructions or contact support rather than attempting to open the pump mechanism.

WACACO TIP

Deep cleaning should be guided by your product's instructions and the condition of its components. More frequent disassembly isn't necessarily better maintenance.

04 / WATER & MINERALS

DOES YOUR ESPRESSO MAKER NEED DESCALING?

Understanding water quality and mineral deposits.

Water naturally contains dissolved minerals, including calcium and magnesium. Depending on local water hardness, these minerals can leave deposits on surfaces that regularly come into contact with water.

However, not all portable espresso makers require the same descaling procedure. Their internal materials, valves, and pumping mechanisms can differ significantly.

Unlike some countertop espresso machines, many manual portable brewers have no built-in boiler or heating element. This means generic descaling instructions designed for conventional coffee machines may not be appropriate.

What should you do?

Begin with good everyday water management:

  • Use fresh, clean drinking water for brewing.
  • Empty the water tank after use.
  • Dry the tank according to your product instructions.
  • Avoid leaving water standing inside the brewer during extended storage.
  • Inspect accessible surfaces for visible mineral deposits or unusual buildup.

If you suspect mineral buildup is affecting your machine, consult the official instructions or Wacaco support before using a chemical descaling product.

Do not assume that vinegar, citric acid, or a commercial espresso descaler is suitable for every Wacaco model.

IMPORTANT

Do not introduce descaling chemicals into your Wacaco espresso maker unless the procedure and cleaning product are approved for your specific model. An incorrect solution or cleaning method may damage internal components.

05 / SEALS & COMPONENTS

SMALL PARTS. IMPORTANT DETAILS.

Recognize the signs of wear.

Seals and gaskets help maintain proper connections between different parts of your espresso maker. When these components are clean and correctly positioned, they contribute to reliable brewing.

Over time, or following improper assembly, you may notice changes in the way your machine operates.

What should you look for?

  • Visible damage: Cracks, tears, or deformation in an accessible seal.
  • Unexpected leaks: Water or espresso escaping from a connection that normally remains sealed.
  • Unusual pumping resistance: The pump feels significantly harder to operate than during normal brewing.
  • Difficulty building pressure: Brewing behavior changes despite using your usual coffee and preparation method.

Not every change indicates a defective component. Coffee grounds trapped near a sealing surface, incorrect assembly, or a grind that is too fine can produce similar symptoms.

How to respond

First, stop brewing if a leak or abnormal resistance occurs. Allow the machine to cool, then inspect the accessible components and verify that everything is correctly assembled.

Remove visible coffee residue and check that the seals are properly positioned.

If a component appears damaged, or the problem continues after normal cleaning and correct assembly, contact Wacaco support for model-specific assistance.

Never force a resistant pump or modify an internal pressure component.

WACACO TIP

A change in pumping resistance isn't always a maintenance issue. With ground-coffee models, grind size and coffee dose can also affect the force required to extract espresso.

06 / READY FOR THE ROAD

TRAVEL LIGHT. STORE RIGHT.

Keep your brewer ready for every adventure.

Portable espresso makers are designed to accompany you beyond the kitchen. Whether you're commuting, hiking, or traveling for several weeks, proper storage helps protect your equipment between brewing sessions.

Before packing

Empty any remaining water and remove used coffee grounds or capsules. Clean the appropriate components and allow them to dry before returning the machine to its protective case.

If you're unable to clean your brewer thoroughly while traveling, remove as much residue as possible and complete the recommended cleaning procedure when suitable facilities are available.

During travel

Use a compatible protective case where available. Keep your machine away from loose sand, dust, and objects that may damage the housing or accessible components.

Avoid leaving water inside the machine where freezing temperatures may occur. Expanding ice can damage components and seals.

For longer storage

Clean and dry all accessible parts thoroughly. Store the brewer in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.

Before using the machine again after an extended break, inspect its condition and follow the initial preparation instructions for your specific model.

WACACO TIP

A protective case helps shield your equipment from scratches and minor impacts, but it doesn't replace proper cleaning. Always store your espresso maker clean and dry.

07 / WHAT TO AVOID

COMMON CLEANING MISTAKES.

Good maintenance starts with the right habits.

Most cleaning problems are avoidable. A few simple precautions can help protect your portable espresso maker and preserve its performance.

PUTTING THE BREWER IN A DISHWASHER

Minipresso GR2, Minipresso NS2, Nanopresso, and Picopresso are not dishwasher safe. Clean the components using their recommended methods.

STORING COMPONENTS WHILE WET

Trapped moisture can lead to unwanted odors and unhygienic storage conditions. Allow cleaned parts to dry separately before packing.

USING ABRASIVE CLEANING TOOLS

Avoid steel wool, abrasive pads, and sharp objects that could scratch surfaces or damage seals. Use suitable soft brushes and cloths.

APPLYING UNAPPROVED CHEMICALS

Household cleaners and descaling products aren't universally compatible with portable espresso makers. Follow the approved cleaning guidance for your model.

FORCING A BLOCKED PUMP

If the pump becomes unusually resistant, stop and investigate according to the product instructions. Excessive force can damage components.

DISASSEMBLING PARTS UNNECESSARILY

Only remove components intended for user maintenance. Internal pressure mechanisms should not be opened or modified without authorized instructions.

08 / YOUR CARE ROUTINE
